Rail Service

Rail service within the Park is provided by Seaview Transportation Co., Inc. and consists of approximately 14 miles of track which includes two branches, in association with numerous sidings and yards. The rail system connects to National Class I carriers. The Quonset Development Corporation recently completed rehabilitation work on 6.5 miles of rail track and track substructure, including installation of cross ties, switch timbers, ballasts, turnouts, surfacing and other track related materials.
QDC's rail rehabilitation project complements the work recently completed by the Rhode Island Department of Transportation on the Freight Rail Improvement Project (FRIP). The FRIP created dedicated sections of a third track along Amtrak's Northeast corridor to allow freight movements in Rhode Island in concert with Amtrak's high speed Acela trains. A complicated and expensive element in the FRIP project was to increase the clearance on the rail line to allow passage of automobile carriers, with vehicles stacked three high throughout the project. Increasing the clearance meant rebuilding bridges and in some cases lowering the grade of the tracks. P&W had already made the same improvements from the Boston Switch to Worcester. Together the improvements open up freight track services to the Business Park tenants including Toray Plastics, BB&S lumber, Sea Fresh and NORAD.
