uonset’s success in recent years has been driven in large part by the QDC’s ability to anticipate, and then meet, the needs of the marketplace.
The list of Quonset initiatives that put the Business Park ahead of the curve is a long one. Site Readiness (now a statewide model), the Gateway Offices (at 100% occupancy even before completion) and the Flex Industrial Spaces (filled to capacity) have all been crucial to creating a platform for 13,000 jobs at 228 companies.
The Quonset Multi-modal Off-shore Wind Transport Center (QMTC) is currently on a trajectory to be the next initiative that succeeds by anticipating the needs of the marketplace, this time positioning Rhode Island as a wind energy center for the North Atlantic. Quonset’s current plans envision that the $35 million center for the development, operations and maintenance of off-shore wind farms will be financed with investments by private business.
“As part of Orsted’s bid on the next big wind energy project, the company included $35 million for the construction of the QMTC,” said Steven King, P.E., managing director of the QDC. “There is still work to be done, but we look forward to partnering with them on this important effort.”
As currently envisioned, the QMTC will total 146,250 square feet, including four aircraft hangars and space for eight tenants – all prepared to meet a company’s unique needs.
“This is the next evolution of wind power for Rhode Island, and it is a tremendous opportunity for our state,” King added.
